Archaeology field school: online and on-site
An ‘online and on site’ archaeology field school that explains the whole archaeological process – from where to dig to what happens after the excavation ends.
This field school includes two online introductory sessions and a full day excavating at a Roman villa site in Doynton, South Gloucestershire with local archaeology company Archeoscan.
Monday 12 April, 7.30pm – 9pm
Online Zoom session: Find out about the skills, techniques and theories involved in archaeological fieldwork.
Sunday 18 April, 10am – 4pm
On site: Get hands on and help excavate the site of a Roman villa at Doynton. Have a go at surveying using a total station and create plans and section drawings following archaeological conventions. Supervisors will be on hand to show you the basic techniques and help you throughout.
Monday 26 April, 7.30pm – 9pm
Online Zoom session: Discover what happens to objects and information once excavations are over.
Online lectures are delivered by archaeologists from Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and the Portable Antiquities Scheme. A recording will be made available for those not able to attend these evenings. A reading list and further information will also be provided.
Suitable for
All sessions are suitable for complete beginners to those who have studied archaeology before but are keen to find out more. They are open to everyone aged 16 and over.

On-site access
Participants will need to be able to make their own way to Doynton, South Gloucestershire. Full directions will be provided nearer the time. There is no parking on site and access to the excavation involves a 10-15 minute walk down a country lane.
This is a rural site so facilities are limited. Toilet facilities are basic with a screened off soakaway in the ground and there is no running water, though bottled water will be provided.
Archaeology is a physical activity but every measure possible will be taken to ensure that everyone can join in. If you have specific access requirements, please let us know in advanced and we will do our best to support you.
